August 16, 2009 – Day 21: Watson Lake to Fort Nelson – 319.04 Miles
- The Road West out of Watson Lake
Light showers today, and lots of wildlife. I spoke with a couple at a fuel stop that needed to use the phone, no cell service, to report an accident that had happened about 30 minutes ago, just down the road about 45km.
As I approached the location of the accident I stopped next to a woman tending to a man that was pretty banged up, but most likely going to be alright. I told them the RCMP had been contacted and they were on their way, then I delivered the bad news, it would take a little over an hour for them to reach the scene.
- Kechika River Basin
As I proceeded to leave I looked toward the debris field that ended at an overturned pickup in the shallow valley to my left. No tire tracks or skid marks on the road and judging from the distance he traveled into the valley I guessed him to be traveling 105-115kph when he left the road. I’d seen this kind of accident before, when I worked as Operations Supervisor for the bus company, the driver had most likely fell asleep behind the wheel. As I found myself pulling into Fort Nelson I couldn’t help but think how lucky I had been, or was my luck running out, the outcome has yet to be determined.
